Fire dancing has been practiced for centuries, and the art of fire dancing is alive and well on Maui.   The best place to see this form of dance is at a gathering called “Hula Kahiko.” Hula Kahiko means ancient dance, so it’s no surprise that these gatherings are all about traditional Hawaiian culture.

Fire Dancers Maui is part of most Luau’s in Maui. There are various styles of fire dancers in Hawaii including Dancers with Fire Hoops (called poi), those who use flaming sticks or torches called kukui wands, as well as performers who twirl blazing batons in their hands known as hibachi tossers . The variety keeps things interesting, and every show is different.

Fire Dancing In Maui

We are a group of local hawaiian fire dancers who have been performing for over three decades on the island of Maui. We take pride in our craft and love to share this ancient art with people from all over the world. Our performances are filled with grace, beauty, sensuality and an undeniable sense of power that will mesmerize you! The best way to see us perform is at one of our many public shows or workshops offered year-round.  Our fire performers and dancers person fire’s hawaiian at its best!

History: In ancient Polynesia there were various forms of dance including social dances called Hula Kahiko which usually involved chanting while moving very slowly; religious ceremonies known as Kapu (taboos); healing rituals called Lua (dancing); and Hula Auana (modern hula) which was performed for entertainment.

This form of dance is called Kahiko, a type of ancient Hawaiian spiritual connection to the past that has been lost in many other parts of the world. The dances are usually accompanied by chant and drumming, instruments used as far back as 1000 AD! We still use these traditional instruments today while performing our own unique style of Kahiko.

FIRE DANCING

We also perform Fire Dancing or Tuki-aonae Kai – this means “the art of fire dancing” in Hawaii pidgin language (Hawaiian Creole English). Fire Dancers Maui is one group you can find on Maui who performs at various festivals and events.

The fire is used to represent the sun that warms us, and also as a way of connecting with our ancestors who were masters at this art form.  Hawaii Luau Company is one of the top dancers Hawaiian!

Hawaiian Fire Dancers

Hawaiian Fire Dancers is a main component to many luaus in Hawaii.

Hawaii is filled with many traditions that have been passed down through generations.

One of those traditions are Fire Dancers Hawaii.

The dancers not only perform at luaus, but they also teach classes to the public and private schools on how to fire dance.

Dancing in a circle around an open flame can be considered dangerous so these classes go over safety techniques such as how to use your clothing or hair for protection from the flames as well as what movements should be avoided while dancing near an open flame.

Some dances performed by Fire Dancers include traditional Tahitian Hula, Samoan Siva Tau (a form of ancient war dance), Tongan Kapakahi (dance usually performed at weddings), and Tahitian Rahui (dance performed by the spirits of those who have passed away).

Dances are usually accompanied with music, chanting, or drums.

Hawaii Luau Company offers a variety of classes to teach people about fire dancing while also providing entertainment for special events.

The team is made up of performers that travel around Hawaii performing at different venues such as schools, luaus/festivals, private parties, weddings, corporate functions and more.

The Fire Dancers can provide all equipment needed for an event including torches that start on fire with just one touch! These skilled dancers create beautiful displays in dark spaces lit only by their flaming torches and dance moves set off sparks from their costumes which are made of fire-resistant fabric.

Hawaii Luau Company is a family business that has been in operation for many years with the goal to provide high quality entertainment and education about the art form of fire dancing all over Hawaii.

Hawaii Luau Company was founded by renowned Hawaiian dancer, instructor and choreographers Mel and Kani Masoe, who had a dream to teach people about the Hawaiian culture.

We developed this passion from watching people perform at luaus and wanted more people across our islands be exposed to the beauty of Polynesian culture through rhythmic movement.

Fire Dancer Hawaii is a special technique using flames with different choreography to create a show full of life and vitality.
