Olowalu, a town located on the west side of Maui Island in Hawaii, is home toapproximately 2,000 people.It is located approximately 4 miles (6 km) southeast fromLahaina, on the Honoapiilani Highway.It was home to a large population. The highchiefess Kalola was responsible for its administration. She was Maui king Kekaulike’sdaughter and was also the grandmother of Keopuolani (Keopuolani).Before the arrivalof the Europeans, it was a typical agricultural settlement. They replaced it with asugarcane farm.The site was eventually abandoned after it was destroyed by thesandalwood trade and slaughter in 1790.The possibility of a major real estatedevelopment is being investigated for the area.This location is home to one ofHawaii’s most impressive reefs.Since the beginning of recorded history, Hawaiians have considered Olowalu a refugeor puu honua.People who were being tracked for infractions against a family group orunreachable after crossing the border into the kingdom were considered to bedangerous.Violation of the sanctuary was a capital offense that could lead todeath.The preservation of harmony and peace was a fundamental cultural principle ofPacific Island communities.Olowalu provided a time and space for the Maui people toresolve their differences.These arable fields, also known as kula were once cultivated by Hawaiian planterswho produced food and other material crops.Olowalu is most well-known for its lushshaded breadfruit and dry land taro.There were many other crops,including sweetpotatoes, that produced textiles that could be used for shelter, clothing, andtransportation, such as pili and kukui.These crops were fed by a winding stream aswell as an extensive network of irrigation channels.The region was primarily used forsugarcane cultivation, with a nearby sugar mill.The community is currently sparsely populated.Olowalu Town is a proposed village of600 acres (2.4 km2) on Olowalu Island. It was established in 2005. However, it hadn’tbeen built as of 2012.Plans called for 1,500 residential units, a 300,000 square foot(28,000 m2) shopping center, relocation of the existing highway, and otherinfrastructure.On August 3, the Maui County Council voted 7-1 to include Olowalu inthe “urban growth limit” of the Maui Island Plan. This plan was approved by the statelegislature back in 2011.
